Friday 12th April 26miles

Hoxter  to Stadtoldendorf
 It was very cold last night, and today it has been sleeting. So I have crept into a hotel in this town after only 26 miles. I cycled through Holzminden where I got mildly lost, then through Bevern where I had an expensive coffee in an ice cream parlour, then along small roads through some large fields. Then I crept into an Italian cafe where I had another much better coffee at half the price and was directed to this hotel. My price includes breakfast.
  In Bevern there was a large fancy building which I think must have been an old monastery.
  Am adding some pictures from the trip. Including the bison/Highland cattle from above Arnhem in Holland.

    Ah the memories! Stadtoldendorf was the location of a forward army ammunition depot back in my army days. Lots of activity in that area for me. In Holzminden I saw the terracotta warriors soon after they'd been discovered.

      Saw quite a few army personnel in Holzminden so must still be a base there

Sunday 5th April. 62 miles

Just before Vienna to Krems an der Donau It was wet today, this morning it was angry rain. I did have a quick cycle around Vienna but on Sunday morning everything looked cold and wet. So to warm up I cycled along to Klosterneuburg which had an enormous castle/monastery, it also had an expensive but warm and dry cafe/restaurant which was open. I spent a long time in there, and a very short time looking around the outside of the large historic building.   Then continued along my cycle route. The rain eased, rather than stopped, Great countryside. Woods cookoos and the smell of wild garlic. A nice ride as long as I kept moving, stop and I soon felt a chill.   Now in quite a large but very pleasant town, and I am camping in a site by the river, with no main road or railway nearby. Tuesday 7th May 75 miles

Grein to Inzel Cycled through Linz today-quite a big place and famous because it is where Hitler spent his youth. There were a lot of road works going on and a lot of grand buildings visible, but I did not stop for long. It was nice to reach quiet stretches again.What a treat this evening has been cycling along a narrow road by the river with the swans and ducks for company and the river winding through rocky cliffs, which are forested. Camping at a small site overlooking the river. Other cyclists, clean shower,bins emptied, friendly owner. Nice. What cycling is all about.

Tuesday 30th May. 68 miles

Raining today and cold, probably a good thing because it was 7 miles up to the Slovakian border. The route says it is not suitable for lorries, excellent quiet,beautiful,misty and atmospheric, also very steep. Lots of bird sound, cocks crowing cookoos hooting. Then after the top it was a long gentle downhill through different kinds of forest.   This part of Slovakia looks a bit poorer than Chezia. The towns have little old shops selling all sorts. Still found a trendy cafe in Trencin the waitress was wearing very very tight trousers! I have found the old Eastern European megaphone land. Cycling through a very small rural village suddenly music sounded and then a voice started talking and on she went. Later in another village they were playing Eurovision style music.   So I am now following the Vah river south, through the large valley floor supports the river, a motorway the old road I am following and a local railway .
