Sunday 14th April Day19
40 miles meandering up and down along the contours of the Hatz mountains. I have been following route 1 which has been taking me along logging roads, up cobbled streets to Gormangask style fortified old buildings, down into the towns along the way, and then steeply up again.
This is a fairy tale Germany, with timbered buildings, towers where Princesses could be held captive by wicked witches, and forests where Hansel and Gretel lost their way.
At first it was dry. I cycled through Bad Harzburg, full of nick knack shops, then IIsenburg which had a fairy tale lake with swans the by the time I Reached Wernigerode the sleet was back.
Blackenburg was larger than expected, my mio tried to take me over a muddy field so I had to backtrack and zoom down the main road in to Thale where I am staying tonight. There is a campsite by the river but My bedraggled body took me into the 'pension' before I reached It.
I have passed a couple from Luxembourg touring, they had lost there way and had to cycle down a hill they had just gone up. They where not smiling! Or perhaps they where following the witches cycle route and had lost their broomsticks.
